When do things start getting real serious for Marines ?

I’m still Broken asked:

For former marines, when can you say things started to get real for you ? Was during, before, or after boot camp ? When do they start making you fill out all the paper work and do they make you work out after filling it all out ? Just curious of the opinions of others when it started feeling serious ?
Do you go through the whole process of paper work, and working out when you enlist ?

When you go to enlist you sit down with a recruiter and they’ll get you started by first deciding whether or not you’re qualified then by having you take the ASVAB. Once they have your ASVAB scores they can talk about what MOS’s you qualify for. Prior to going to MEPS you’ll do all the paper work and at MEPS you’ll swear in to the DEP. Before you ship to boot you go back to MEPS and sign the contract / get sworn into the Marine Corps; however, recruits are not given the title of “United States Marine” until they graduate boot camp.

Things started getting serious for me once I made the commitment to join. I got the paper work filled out regarding the length of my contract, back ground checks, what my shipping date was and what my MOS is, went to MEPS to take the ASVAB and get a physical. Once that’s done I attended poolee functions every Thurs. and every 2 weeks we will run an IST or a PFT to make sure that we were up to the physical standards for boot camp which gets really, really serious from there.

The second you step off the bus things get preeeetty serious. You start filling out serious paperwork when you meet with a recruiter, sometimes your first visit.

The paperwork is pretty intimidating since it needs to be ENTIRELY truthful and they are government documents and you have to sign your full name (including middle name, which most people don’t usually sign).

On the YELLOW footprints at MCRD!

It’s an eye opening situation that can’t get ANYMORE more serious than that until combat!

It got serious for me when we got off the bus at MCRD San Diego and they all had us stand on these yellow painted footprints and started rattling off the UCMJ.  I didn’t really pay attention until they got to 134 and yelled, ‘And just in case you do something, anything, look at me funny, walk the wrong way, this article is for you.  This is the catch all article!’  I remember thinking, ‘dang, I’m gonna be in trouble no matter what!’

My daughter, Lance Cpl…… said, I just ask her this one on the net, … she said it got serious when she got on that bus at MEPS. that before that it was not, but that bus ride up to Paris Island was the longest ride, and she said she could not eat when they stopped for dinner, and when they left the rest, the van, was silent, completely silent, not a word the rest of the way to the Island, to her, that is when it finally sunk in, that she was going to Paris Island, to be a recruit and try to become that Marine,

    GOOD LUCK
