Always ask questions and read your contract. Each contract has different time periods and specific restrictions. Generally your training time will count towards your time in service. His contract date didn't start until he was winged and as a helo pilot he has a five year contract vs fixed wing guys with an 8 year one - differences in the amount of training required I guess. I don't know how long the ground contracts are but that time does count towards your years of service in regards to pay. Hope this helps, talk to your OSO as well. But yes if there is a contract it starts the day you begin training. If he was enlisted and then became commissioned he had to re-up for another 6 years. But, yes, your basic counts toward your time in service, as would college if you are enrolled in ROTC, or any other prior military service.
