What’s USMC basic training like in the winter?
September 14th, 2009 | by MakingMarines |xxxrocknroll asked:
What kind of clothes do they give you? Will I be freezing in my bunk? Won’t everything, especially running, be 10x more difficult? Would everything still take place outside? =\
Obviously bootcamp isn’t going to be a breeze, that’s a given. I was just asking if it was harder in the winter? =\

the running won’t be more difficult, parris island is still temparate in the winter, as are san diego/pendleton. only thing is, in the winter the temps go down at parris island enough that the sand fleas cans urvive, and they are supposed to be nasty. i went in the summer and the only bug i ever had trouble with were these black flies in the grass.
but take it from someone who has been there- don’t join the marines. go air force. the word “honor” is just an excuse to be abusive to someone,or an excuse to send good men off to their deaths. go air force, get the same benefits, better facilities, because employers won’t give a crap when you get out.

Since both MCRD’s (Marine Corps Recruit Depot) are in mild climates winter training isn’t that bad. It can be even worse in the summer when the temps hit 100 degrees.
A lot of the training is indoors. During first phase, training includes a lot of classroom work such as Marine Corps history, first aid, etc. Cold weather training is even done indoors. Waters survival is indoors. When the weather is too severe to train outside, the time is used for indoor training.
The only phase where you are almost always outdoors is during marksmanship training. You are wearing a shooting jacket so it is hot in the summer and not so bad in the winter.

You will be issued a fleece pullover, thermal top and bottom (long underwear) and a gore-tex jacket. Running is not difficult in the cold…you’ll actually get alot warmer. I went to recruit training at MCRD San Diego, which is not really that cold of a place, except that you get a really moist wind off the ocean that sucks. Everything will still take place outside, and you will be cold at times. Marines are expected to be able to perform in any climate, under any conditions. Once you pass recruit training you’ll look back and realize it was child’s play. Our field portion of training took place in Nov/ Dec, and there were times we froze our butts off at not, but its really not that bad. I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Actually I think going in the winter is better than going in the fall, because fall is when all the douche bags that just graduated high school go to boot camp.
I hope my answer helped you out a little.
Good Luck =P

Its much easier in the winter. I went to San Diego MCRD in the summer…I wish it had been winter, and the guys that went to parris Island really had it rough in summer, lots more bugs out in summer than winter down south as well as the heat and humidity..running and everything is much easier in the cooler winter months than it is in the hot wet summer time..it was hot and dry in SD ,extremely hot,and dusty. They will provide any clothes you need and some you dont,so dont worry about that, and it doesnt get cold enough to make any of it miserable..much better to be cool than broiled alive in the summer. Its not like you’ll be running in snow or anything at basic, its nice and comfortable there in the winter..(trust me the climate is the least of your miserys at MCRD). Study your litle green monster till you know it cover to cover, learn your general orders upside down and backwards,..get your push ups and sit ups to the PFT level before you ship out,and run everyday..once your there, dont do anything to draw attention to your self and do what your told, when your told.Dont worry about freezing or feeling cold in your bunk, the little time you get to spend there you dont feel anything….and remember to start every sentence to anyone other than another recruit with “Sir!!!” …

not the answer you want i’m sure, but it the same as the rest of the year, just not as hot. millions of others have survived it you will too. i would rather go in the winter than summer when it’s hot.
