The two most important benefits to becoming a Marine are the pride you will have at becoming a member of a true warrior class. Something that very few people on this earth can say. You will also gain the focus and discipline to succeed in any endeavor you set your mind to, now and in the future.
As far as slow promotions and outdated equipment, I made sergeant (E-5) in four years as a "peace-time" Marine and would have cared less if I had a bear-skin for a uniform and a club for a weapon.
Read the book "Marine, the Biography of LtGen Louis B. "Chesty" Puller" That will get your blood pumping.

As a former Marine officer, I would of course, be proud to see you join the USMC, but it is not for everyone. Here are a few things you need to know. The marines promote just as often as every other branch of service ONCE YOU ARE IN. your recruiter may offer you a higher rank when you leave boot camp, but that also incurs a longer enlistment. As far a equipment, I was in a tank company with M1A1 block 2 tanks, which was pretty modern(read best tank in the world), the communication equipment, aircraft (AV-8B,F/A-18, and now the most modern helicopter replacement, the Osprey) etc.. You get what you put into anything, and the USMC is that, as all the services are. Talk to active service men and women in ALL services, look at what they offer you, and how it fits into your life. Speak with recruiters, and define to them what you want, and can they give it to you (get any contract agreements in writing, verbal doesn't hold water when you leave the office). Good luck with whatever branch you choose

Benefits: pride, bragging rights, nice uniforms and haircuts. I think the marines are sharp and tough. I was in the army and i don't regret it, but the marines would have been cooler.
