Nobody said it wasn’t stupid. It may be stupid to you but to these warriors it is an important “family tradition” that they gladly partake. If it was something easy you probably wouldn’t think it stupid but then they wouldn’t do it (something easy). It’s gotta be hard and for no logical reason in order to test and grow their faith in each other…..it’s not stupid to me.

Every elite hardcore job has a hazing, it reinforces comradeship. Military, cops, paramedics, firefighters, all have a hazing. It’s called cloistering.
So,do something that takes some balls then tell me if you think this is stupid.
Yah fuckin’ dink.

If I recall correctly it was about 18. Got lucky that the DA Plt and R & S were on deployment. I happened to be assigned to the DRP when I got my Gold Wings.

I,m sure every unit has there different traditions, since it took ten jumps to get gold wings we did ten. Then pinned your self ten. How many times did you get pinned? I’ve been to pinnings with 30+ gold wingers. did you also have the $110 each bar tab from the ons getting pinned?

Hey Jeff…ITR is now called SOI (School of Infantry).
03 backbone of the Corps!!!

jc85cap, I served in “THE CORPS” just after “NAM” . Focus on “BOOTCAMP” first. Get some insight on what “OUR” CORPS is all about. You’ll have to prove youself during ITR ( damn.. do they still call it that) That stands for Infantry Training Regiment. Then if you “STAND” out from the rest, then by “GOD” “GO FOR IT” Start RUNNING, follow up with WEIGHT training , Back in the “DAY” I ran MONDAY , WED, FRIDAYS , TUESDAY and THURSDAY weight training GOD BLESS, SEMPER FI

this is 1st recon bn. and some 1st force guys. A gold wing ceremony only happens after you go to jump school, then do ten jumps with your unit. Thats when you get pinned. This happens to be at a bar in san clemente, I was there 2 months after this was taken to get my pinning. since you make ten jumps you pick ten people to pin you, then you pin your self ten times. only those who have went through this can pin another person. THIS IS TRADITION! recon is a 100% volunteer unit.

my marine corps had it for the wings, bubble and nco stripe, after getting out less than a year ago 21 and half years, i indirectly made sure tradition was kept, as it should be. for any hopeful or current F/R or anglico or aircrews keep up the tradition semper fi

it takes alot of actual training to get to that level. its not like we just go buy the wings once we get out of jump school and spend the next few weeks beating them into eachothers chest.

Recon should come and visit while you are in Infantry school and they will ask “who wants to try out” if you are up for it raise your hand and then you will find out. Make sure you are a strong swimmer and runner for that matter. If you can do those two good the rest should be a cake walk.

The second time I picked up LCpl I was pinned, it worked didn’t lose rank again. Rite-of-passage, its meaning is longer lasting than the pain. Semper Fi.

To Marines and Recon Marines of the present and past: I am enlisting in the USMC after high school and I have less than a year to prepare for whatever is ahead of me. So far I plan on being a grunt (0311) provided that I complete my training. But lately Recon has fascinated me and I’d really and I mean REALLY appreciate it if a Marine could tell me a thing or two about Recon. What kind of training you have to go through, etc. Basically how do you know that you are cut out for this?n e tips4boot?
