its quite simple-
who can hump the largest load the fastest for the longest and then assault an enemy that outnumbers them and then hold on until the cavalry arrives…..all without artillery, naval gunfire or other support

The ribbon on his uniform is the National Defense Service Medal (for joining during a time of war). He is an enlisted Lance Corporal, not an officer.
