Bon T asked:

I am a high school student and planning to join te Marine Corps after I graduate. I haven’t talk to a recruiter yet but I will. Since I don’t usually have Internet access to research, can anybody explain to me the steps being a Marine? ( I mean like what do you do after you signed up, and when do you take health, blood test and physical test, etc, and how long it takes from the time I signed up till I can go to boot camp)? Also some advices wouldn’t hurt.

All your medical is done at MEPS. This is also where you’ll be sworn in and get on the bus to PI or San Diego.

Advice? Listen to what your NCO’s say, don’t forget to call the room to attention if an officer walks in, and do not hesitate. Good luck and if you want to talk some more, shoot me a message.

Step one: Talk with the recruiter, he will probably give you a practice asvab test and ask you some general medical questions. Once you decide you want to join he will schedule the physical and real asvab test at a Military Entrance Processing Station, or MEPS.
Step Two: Go to MEPS and take the asvab first, then the next morning take the physical.
Step Three: Once you have cleared the physical, you will sit down with a MEPS liason who will tell you what dates and what specific jobs you can have, if you have not already done so with your recruiter.
Step Four: Go over the paperwork one final time and sign many times, ensure that what you were told you were going to get is in your paperwork.
Step Five: Take the oath of enlistment, you are now in the delayed entry program or DEP.
Step Six: Meet with your recruiter at least once a month and call him at least once a week to keep him updated on how you are doing. If you need more personal attention from him to prepare for boot camp, he will arrange a schedule for you too. You will have to do an initial strength test which is crunches, pull ups, and a 1.5 mile run. You will have to pass this before you go to bootcamp.
Step Seven: The day you ship to bootcamp, you will again go to MEPS and be screened by the doctor to make sure nothing has changed, go over and sign the final paperwork to ensure all is in order, get tickets etc….
Step Eight: You will fly to bootcamp and earn the title US Marine.

You can be in the DEP for up to a year, but normally within a couple months of graduation, you will go to bootcamp.

well you get sworn in at your MEPS station and they will do all the physical, blood, and drug tests there. after that you get sworn in. there is no telling how long it will take to go to boot camp. i went three days after by choice. but i know people who went a year after.just prepare yourself physically and mentally. thats about all you can do.

All heath test are done at MEPS. You will do an IST (initial strength test) before you leave for boot camp. This is a very basic test to give you a base line of where you are physically. When you leave for boot camp will depend on what your MOS (your job in the Marines) will be. Some schools for example infantry 0311, are not more than a month or two long. These have classes that start all the time so you can leave for boot camp sooner. The more technical a school is, i.e. helicopter mechanic, the longer the school, some up to a year long. When the next class starts will go a long way to determine when you go to boot camp. The reason behind this is to get you into your school as soon as possible after boot camp and MCT. You wouldn’t want to graduate and then spend 3 months doing working parties waiting for your school to start!

As far as advice goes, the most important thing you take to boot camp with you is a POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE!! Start telling yourself that you WILL NOT FAIL. You WILL EARN your EGA. YOU WILL walk across that grinder and become a US MARINE.

Good luck to you devil pup. Any more questions, shoot me an e-mail. Semper Fi.

dont hesitate to ask questions before signing up.

when you get off that bus, they will yell alot!

you will get all your medical, dental, and eyes checked before you start pt.

you will spend an entire 13 weeks of boot camp getting yelled at and doing physical training and getting yelled at some more.

if you cry easily i would recommend going to the air force because they aint as tough, and their training is only 6 weeks
