If he has a green card and is a permanent resident of the U.S. he can join the military. I read an article that stated if someone has a green card and is a permanent resident, and they join the military, the waiting period to become an official US Citizen is shortened to 3 months while they are serving in the military.

A student visa won't cut it - he'll have to gain real legal residency first, a "green card."

Bill,

I served with 1st Marine Air Wing (1997-2001).

We had several non-US citizens in the Wing, mostly from Mexico, Philippines, Canada, and Latin America.

By serving in the US military, they can expedite becoming US citizens if they choose to do so.
