depends on the situation as to what type of hearing protection you use. But in a training situation, all participants wear hearing protection, or are required to.

at ranges where the students are enclosed or closer together, the required hearing protection was called "circum aural protectors" or ear muff type protection.

at out door ranges, the required wear was insert-able hearing protection. could be silicon, foam, or at one time wax covered cotton (looked and even smelled like a piece of double bubble chewing gum) but the main job was to seal the aural canal.

hearing protection in an actual combat situation? not real likely. in the type uniform of the future (that helmet that looks like a motorcycle helmet) you do get sound attenuation.

the sad thing is, you never harden your hearing to the noise. each explosive sound causes some damage. what happens is that you gradually lose the ability to perceive noise. ever wonder why your Sgt talks so loud? he might really be talking to really hear his voice (I couldn't resist that).

I can relate, during my vacation I stayed on the military beach guest facility in NC. and could hear practice shots going off at night, very very noisy so I can imagine the noise up close, I do think you are permitted to use ears plugs. Thank you for serving.

Yes, they wear ear protection. It isn't as loud as you think.

When you got to infantry training battalion you fire rocket launchers, machine guns, and all sorts of weapons without ear protection.
