How to prepare your mind for USMC BOOT CAMP?
May 5th, 2009 | by MakingMarines |Lava Dog asked:
How exactly does a person work out his/her mind for Marine Corps boot camp?? and if someone has never been through USMC boot camp how can they give advice about how to mentally prepare for USMC boot camp? What exactly does “mentally” prepare for boot camp mean?
Hey there ” artemtb” where in my question did I say I was going to join the Marines?? and for your information I have been there and done that..Do you know what a Lava Dog is my friend?? Its a Marine who was stationes where I was stationed, in MCB HAWAII, but I dont suppose a “suppose” Marine such as yourself would know this….feel free to email me if you need anything else cleared up..next time think before you decide to question my service to the USA..Semper Fi

It’s all a mind game. They are either trying to get your to cry, yell, laugh, or cuss them out. Be as catatonic as possible, but still be responsive.

You really can’t mentally prepare for it! Its nothing like you think when you get there everything you ever thought you knew about boot when you get there goes out the window! Its a GREAT experience!!! You’ll hate it when you’re there but when you’re done and graduate you realize what a huge honor it is! just be ready to get yelled at ALOT and be ready for the drills….bed drills, water drills, sweat drills, shaving drills for the guys! sooooo many different things! Don’t stick out! Try to blend in!

Full Metal Jacket is the last thing you should watch… before I went to USMC boot camp in Parris Island I prepared my mind by realizing that no matter what I had to make it through… I expected to be yelled at and called names… I expected to not get any sleep… but I put in my head that nothing was gonna get in the way of me becoming a Marine

Mind over matter! You tell yourself you can make it and don’t listen to your weak inclinations to drop out. Pain is weakness leaving the body.
Don’t take it personal, your DI doesn’t hate you. He’s got a job to do and he’s good at it. He’s playing a role and he’s been there where you’re headed. Beneath it all he’s a regular joe.
Semper Fi and thanks for serving.

Well as a girlfriend of a USMC Lcpl for 4 yrs I must say I’ve heard some stories about boot camp that makes me wonder why he went BUT I think the best way to mentally prepare is to be ready to take ALOT of direction and to be treated like crap. Also my boyfriend always said how much the letters he received in boot camp and training helped him get through it so make sure you have ALOT of support. I realize you might not take my answer as serious because I’m just a girlfriend and I wasn’t the one physically there but I figured I’d give some insight anyway. Good luck and be safe.

You will go through the hardest basic training of the US forces. Everybody yells at you, you are no longer a individual you are a unit. No longer use me or I use we or us. You will get blistered feet. You loose track of time. You have to be perfectly neat and tidy. You will have to change your vocabulary like you are on a ship. Do not have an attitude you would be commiting suicide. Do not complain. You are no longer given rights.

first word of advice is to change your current and any other screen names from giving the impression you’re already a Marine. Stop pretending you have something you don’t find out if this is what you want. During boot camp it is quite easy to quit and that’s when you’ll have to reach down and grab a pair so don’t even stress it now.

About the only thing you can try to do is get your workouts done before you go in. Then again its still nothing compared to what they will give you. As far as I know and from what I experienced by going into the Army, which I know is nothing like the Marines, They tear you down. The brake you down and rebuild you and your mind to bend to their way of thinking. Then you are their little robots to do as they want. They train you for battle. They try to harden you for the things you will face in the future. So no there is really nothing you can do to prepare. They bend and mold you to the way they need you to be. You do not even realize it until you get out and people look at you different and say that you have changed. You do not even know it.

To mentally prepare for USMC boot camp, do the following:
Know your General Orders.
Know the rank structure, basic USMC history, customs and courtesies.
Know how to address your DI’s properly by speaking in third person and addressing him/her by sir/ma’am at the end of each sentence.
Being mentally prepare for boot camp isn’t impossible. It means knowing what you could get into as a recruit and later, as a Marine, knowing about basic Marine Corps history, customs, rank structure, etc, and knowing how to be a recruit before you go to boot camp and become a Marine. Being mentally prepared is just as important as being physically prepared. They will make your life a little easier while you’re in boot camp.
