Swang asked:

I’m a Junior in high school and the only thing Ive ever wanted to be was a Marine grunt I’m trying to get in better shape so Marine Boot Camp wont be as much of a shock to my body as the other recruits plus it would be nice to make a perfect PFT score i plan on getting up at about 4:30 every morning to exercise before school and i wanted to workout my lower body and do cardio one day and work on my upper body strength the next so my muscles have a chance to repair themselves while i work on the others so do you have any suggestions? Because i only know basic exercises like push ups, sit ups, crunches, pull-ups, jump roping, and a mile run does this sound good or are there any other workouts to prepare a future Marine
I also have free weights even though i dont use them much any more can you suggest some workouts with it and how to do them?
I would appreciate and info or advice you can give me
Thanks in advance = )

Oo-Rah future recruit! I’m currently in the Marine Corps, I love it.

Anyways, you’re going to want to run a lot and do a lot of pull ups.The most important thing for you is going to be the CFT, Combat Fitness Test. They’ve just implemented it and you’ll most likely have to do it in bootcamp. It involves a timed run in boots and uts (utilities), lifting a 30 or so pound ammo can, and an obstacle that contains body drags, low crawls, and a firemans carry. So you will definitely want to work on your combat conditioning skills.

A mile run is NOT going to be acceptable. The minimum to even get into bootcamp is a mile and a half and to complete it and for the PFT it’s three miles. Depending on your MOS school you PT a lot as well. I PT here at school more than I EVER did in bootcamp. We run 4-5 miles every day and sometimes have death runs of up to 10 or 12 miles.

Work on your basic fitness overall. You’re going to do a LOT of crawling in the mud during BWT (basic warrior training) and the Crucible, so work on your high crawl, low crawl, and back crawl. Infantry training at the SOI is very intense and you’re going to do a lot of humping with a rucksack, so get used to fast walking and learn how to prevent and take care of blisters.

E-mail me at if you have any other questions about the Marine Corps.
